University of Illinois faculty members and administrators are proposing a fundamental change with the university’s new Global Campus distance-learning venture. Fairfield University Boosts Outdoor Wireless

Fairfield's Information Systems Department is keeping pace with wireless demand by adding external wireless antennas to two of its buildings in their newly renovated Quad area. NEW! Mercy College IT Newsletter

Mercy College's recent IT newsletter is smart in the way it features "how to" tips and promotes its training courses. This new effort began in summer 2008 and appears to be publishing every quarter in an easy to read Publisher format which can be posted on its web pages, emailed, and distributed in lobbies. Google Apps at Notre Dame

Google provides a variety of tools for use by educational institutions like Notre Dame. Students can take advantage of free applications like:

GMail-- Over 6GB of e-mail quota, mail search tools, and integrated chat using your nd.edu e-mail address.
GoogleTalk-- Free text and voice calling around the world.
Start Page-- A one-stop page to easily access your inbox, calendar, documents, with the ability to customize.
Google Calendar-- An online tool that allows you to coordinate meetings, schedule events, and share your calendar with others.
Documents & Spreadsheets-- Create, share and collaborate on documents, spreadsheets, and presentations in real-time across campus or across the world.

Lone Star Offers SecondLife Virtual Pilot Program

Lone Star College-Online has partnered with Student Services Representatives across the Lone Star College System to staff a pilot program to offer student services in an online format using Second Life, the internet-based 3-D virtual world. The program is funded from a Lone Star College System mini-grant, and began on Monday, April 13, 2009.

The pilot project is called the Virtual Student Resource Center (VSRC) and is open for business. Students wishing to participate should email: secondlife@lonestar.edu.

The pilot project will end June 30, 2009, so students wishing to take advantage of online resources such as Registration, Financial Aid, Advising and Disability/Veteran services should sign up right away. Hours of operation will be posted in our Virtual Student Resource Center (VSRC).

All Tulane Campuses Go Wireless

Thanks in large part to a substantial donation by Board of Administrators member and co-founder of Netscape Jim Clark, Tulane University added wireless connectivity to its uptown, downtown, and satellite campuses. Wireless access is available in all academic buildings on campus and in public spaces, such as study halls, in residence halls. Members of the Tulane community who wish to use the wireless network must register their wireless card at https://tuwac.tcs.tulane.edu. The network name or SSID is tulane in all lower-case letters. DCCC's Information Technology Support Center provides news through its Knowledgebase with a filtering option for today's news, the week's news, the month's news, or news for the entire year. Users can subscribe to get emails notifying them when news hits the web site.
